HEALTHY LIFESTYLES PROGRAM

The Healthy Lifestyles Program is a group exercise and education program offered twice a week for the people of St George. The program will assist you to make healthy lifestyle choices, increase physical activity levels and improve your health well into the future.

What does the program involve?

  • Work with allied health professionals and students from the areas of exercise physiology, nutrition and dietetics and physiotherapy to improve all areas of health in your life.
  • Supervised exercise sessions with individually programmed strength and aerobic exercise programs.
  • Group education sessions from allied health students covering a range of topics including
    • Goal setting
    • Creating healthy habits
    • Moving for life
    • Eating for health
    • Overcoming blocks and dealing with setbacks
  • Fun and interactive cooking demonstrations
  • Sessions will be run by students and supervised by allied health professionals.

WHO IS THE PROGRAM FOR?

The program is open to all adults who are currently not getting enough exercise; those who are overweight or are at risk of heart disease or diabetes and those people who already have a chronic disease (such as diabetes, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure).

GP clearance may be required for some participants.

PARTICIPANT ELIGIBILITY

Participants should have one or more of the following:

  • Not currently meeting Australian physical activity guidelines
  • At risk of heart disease or diabetes as per screening (AUSDIAB or Heart Health Score)
  • Waist circumference >80cm females, >94cm males
  • BMI >25
  • Diagnosed with hypertension, high cholesterol, or diabetes/prediabetes
  • Diabetes controlled with diet/exercise +/- Biguanides (eg metformin) and or DPP4 inhibitors.

Exclusion Criteria

  • Requires 1:1 supervision for exercise
  • Cognitive impairment

GP clearance required for

  • Diabetics on any medication other than biguanides or DPP4 inhibitors. This includes any diabetic taking insulin.
  • Recent surgery requiring overnight or more admission (less than 12 weeks prior), <4 weeks post minor/day surgery
  • Uncontrolled hypertension ( high blood pressure) >200 systolic or >100 diastolic.
  • Pregnancy after the first trimester
  • Current gestational diabetes
  • Heart failure
  • Stage 4 or 5 kidney disease
  • Any other condition that requires 1:1 supervision for exercise.

For Staff of the Balonne Shire Council

In addition to the Healthy Lifestyles Program open to the community, SQRH are also running a specific program for staff of the Balonne Shire Council and their families. The program will assist you to make healthy lifestyle choices, increase physical activity levels and improve your health well into the future.

WHAT DOES THE PROGRAM INVOLVE?

  • Two sessions a week with 40 minutes of supervised exercise and 20 mins of education in each session.
  • One session per week will be ‘light intensity’ exercise – suitable for beginners and those returning to exercise, and one session per week will be more challenging. Participants are encouraged to attend a minimum of one session per week, attendance at both sessions is recommended.
  • Try different forms of exercise to find what works for you.
    • Community walks
    • Strength and aerobic circuits
    • Gentle mat-based workouts
    • High intensity interval training
    • Body weight-based strengthening
    • Fun games
  • Group education sessions delivered by allied health students covering a range of topics including
    • Goal setting
    • Creating healthy habits
    • Moving for life
    • Eating for health
    • Overcoming blocks and dealing with setbacks
  • Fun and interactive cooking demonstrations where you can sample yummy, healthy foods.
  • Sessions will be carefully supervised by trained health professionals, and all sessions can be modified or tailored to individuals based on their medical and exercise history.
  • All programs are FREE for participants.

WHO IS THE PROGRAM FOR?

  • The program is open to all council staff wanting to improve their health and fitness.
  • Suitable for all levels and ages, from beginners to fitness fanatics.
  • All council staff interested in participating will be required to undergo a short screening assessment. This involves a basic health check.
  • GP clearance may be required for some participants.

WHEN?

  • Sessions held twice a week
  • 40 minutes of exercise followed by 20 minutes of education
  • Duration: 8 weeks
  • Follow up sessions included

PARTICIPANT ELIGIBILITY

Inclusion criteria

  • Not currently meeting Australian Physical activity guidelines (150 minutes per week exercise)
  • At risk of heart disease or diabetes as per screening (AUSDIAB or Heart Health Score)
  • Waist circumference >80cm females, >94cm males
  • BMI >25
  • Diagnosed with hypertension, high cholesterol or diabetes/pre diabetes
  • Diabetes controlled with diet/exercise +/- Biguanides (eg metformin) and or DPP4 inhibitors.

Participants require a clearance from their doctor if:

  • Diabetics on any medication other than biguanides or DPP4 inhibitors. This includes any diabetic taking insulin.
  • Recent surgery: <12 weeks post-surgery requiring overnight or more admission, <4 weeks post minor/day surgery
  • Uncontrolled hypertension EP >200 systolic or >100 diastolic.
  • Pregnancy after the 1st trimester
  • Any other condition that requires 1:1 supervision for exercise.
