SQRH and Darling Downs Health (DDH) have combined to establish a student-led Health and Wellness Clinic (HaWC) in Toowoomba, located at the Baillie Henderson Hospital campus within the pool complex.
The clinic provides health and wellness services delivered by nursing and allied health students who are fully supervised by experienced and registered health professionals.
Chronic disease issues are prevalent in Queensland and in particular across Southern Queensland. Obesity rates, smoking, diabetes and respiratory system disease are all major risk factors. The Health and Wellness Clinic will target individuals with low to rising risk of chronic disease with the intention of providing early intervention as well as building sustainable healthy lifestyle models.
Beginning on July 1, 2019, the SQRH Health and Wellness Clinic is fully equipped to provide participants with the advice, tools and support to live their healthiest lives. Participants are able to exercise in a heated pool and fully equipped gym, learn how to relax and reduce stress, gain skills in preparing healthy meals and develop strategies for a sustainable healthy lifestyle.
Participants are referred by their Medical Practitioner and are supported through a four month program which can include:
An added advantage is that participants know they are helping students gain invaluable experience while fully supervised by experienced health professionals.
Students in Physiotherapy, Exercise Physiology, Dietetics, Psychology, Social Work and Nursing provide health and wellness services under supervision.
