What did you enjoy most about your rural placement?
I enjoyed the immersive experience I was able to have. I was afforded the opportunity to complete a clinical and research-based placement, which meant I was able to consolidate so many of the skills I had been learning at uni prior to placement.
Rural placements are just so much fun. You're working with other students who quickly become friends, and you're all living in a new area that you can explore together. I loved my time in Toowoomba, and the friendships I formed are lifelong.
Would you recommend a rural placement to other students? Why?
Getting out of the metro bubble is a good thing for any clinician. It's important to understand the context of where people are coming from, and it's impossible to do that without seeing it for yourself. Regional, rural and remote areas possess strengths and face challenges that are so different from the city. Taking the opportunity to understand and respond to those strengths and challenges equips a young clinician really well in my opinion.
Also it's a great way to get your foot in the door! I secured my grad position from my placement with SQRH. My regional placement sparked a love of rural and remote work, and now I'm working in a graduate position in the Torres Strait/Cape. You never know where you'll end up if you're open to positions outside of metro areas!
What are your top tips for students considering a rural placement?
I would really just urge anyone considering a rural placement to give it a go! Once you get there, do your best to join the community. Some of my most memorable experiences have come from saying yes and being open to joining the community.
Did you stay in SQRH accommodation or have interaction with SQRH staff?
Yes, I loved being able to utilise the accommodation. Without the accommodation provided by SQRH I wouldn't have been able to complete a rural placement.
From Toowoomba to Charleville, Kingaroy to Goondiwindi, our students’ complete rural placements all over regional, rural, and remote Southern Queensland (across more than 400,000 square kilometres).
Learn first-hand from students, just like yourself, about their experience going on a rural placement, and why it’s an experience like no other!
