What did you enjoy most about your rural placement?
Would you recommend a rural placement to other students? Why?
I would highly recommend a rural placement. You will see a different demographic of clients than what you would in the city, which provides a valuable learning experience. Our placement was student-led, and so I got the chance to practice everything I had learnt up until this point, but still in a safe environment with very supportive supervisors. I would recommend a rural placement for the life outside of the actual placement, as i made strong connections and friends, and got involved in many things I never would have living in the city. The bingo and trivia at the pub were great for winning free shirts and hats! And there are so many great places in towns close by that are worth visiting.
What are your top tips for students considering a rural placement?
My biggest tip would be to get in contact with students who have been in the past, so they can tell you about things to look out for and prepare for. Getting in contact with the supervisor of the placement, is also a great way to learn more about what the placement will entail. Having a car is a huge plus, as then you can visit all the nearby towns and be able to experience more. Just take a leap and apply for it! You won't regret it.
Did you stay in SQRH accommodation or have interaction with SQRH staff?
The accommodation provided was clean and had everything one would need in a home away from home. SQRH staff member, Cass was super helpful with everything.
From Toowoomba to Charleville, Kingaroy to Goondiwindi, our students’ complete rural placements all over regional, rural, and remote Southern Queensland (across more than 400,000 square kilometres).
