What did you enjoy most about your rural placement?
As two Brisbane-based girls, we absolutely loved having the opportunity to immerse ourselves in a new community and environment! From our weekly musical bingo nights at the Club Hotel to walks along the Botanic Parkland, we’ve gotten to see all that Chinchilla (and the surrounding areas) have to offer. We must admit that one of our favourite community events we got to attend was the Jandowae show and rodeo. It was our first time going to a rodeo and the crowd and vibrant energy from the community made it so special for us.
Would you recommend a rural placement to other students? Why?
We would definitely recommend a rural placement to other students (and have already encouraged fellow OT students in their younger years to apply)! It’s such a great way to challenge yourself as a student in a new, but safe, environment. It also exposes you to such a diverse caseload that you don’t always get to experience in the city, allowing you to strengthen your skills.
What are your top tips for students considering a rural placement?
Just do it! You will never regret going rural. Also don’t be afraid to put yourselves out there and sign up to whatever you can in the community - you never know what new hobbies you might pick up! Being away from your home and comfort environment can be challenging, so creating strong habits and routines can be incredibly helpful for that adjustment.
Did you stay in SQRH accommodation or have interaction with SQRH staff?
Yes, we stayed in an SQRH house in Chinchilla. We were so grateful for this, as it removed a lot of that stress trying to find accommodation. Colleen and Neelam (SQRH staff here) were crucial to our integration into the Chinchilla community, informing us of and encouraging our engagement in the various activities available. They were incredible supports and we could not imagine completing this placement without them!
From Toowoomba to Charleville, Kingaroy to Goondiwindi, our students’ complete rural placements all over regional, rural, and remote Southern Queensland (across more than 400,000 square kilometres).
Learn first-hand from students, just like yourself, about their experience going on a rural placement, and why it’s an experience like no other!
